tropichighlife:

Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey’s “Oyename” is a beautifully long highlife-juju fusion jam. This song is ten and a half minutes of pure deep grooves. This is one of the luckiest finds I’ve ever pulled. It’s dirty and nasty but it is still so sweet to the ears. There is no date or information on the actual record except that it was recorded and pressed in Lagos, Nigeria. There is just one cryptic message printed on the back that says:

“Every nerve and muscle arises to the tune of musical stringes when Ebenezer Obey steps into a concert hall to demonstrate his muscial Wizardry. His mastery over ‘Juju’ speaks well of itself and this has motivated every soul in the musical world to call him ‘Juju Wizard’. The confirmation of the name ‘Juju Wizard’ will be realised when listening to his new LP since the sweetness of a pudding is in the eating pay attention when you hear him from any quarter”

Upon researching Ebenezer Obey more I discovered this guy’s discography is huge and continues all the way into the 2000s. I believe this album is from around the 60s though and either way this cut is fantastic. Nigerian highlife at its best. Unfortunately I couldn’t upload the whole file. About 5 minutes in some really beautiful vocals start too.

karl hector & the malcouns - followed path

another one from the parisdj’s site; i discovered this instrumental afrobeat track thanks to their african mashed potato popcorn vol. 7 mix. karl hector & the malcouns have roots in germany, and release music on stones throw, which blew my mind a little bit. i’m not sure about all of you, but i love music like this…..enjoy
